Handling the Nerves
Preparing to go to another country on my own was perhaps one of the most daunting things I have ever done in my life. I felt anxious for weeks leading up to it. I was leaving behind my family who I am so close with, my boyfriend of 7 years, my friends, my pets, everything! So how do you handles these feelings of anxiety and the unknown? Take a look at the various ways I handled the situation.
Before you leave, have a party! Getting together with my family the night before I left helped ease my nerves. I felt surrounded by love and support which made my more secure in my decision to go abroad. I had gotten together with friends for lunch or drinks before leaving, but on my last night I wanted to be with my family. My aunts and uncles and my cousins came together for my last hoorah in the states for four months!
Packing Up
Here are some things I found helpful when packing up for your trip
-
Start making a list of everything you use about a month before you leave
-
Talk with your doctor to make sure you have any necessary medications for the duration of your trip
-
Bring a supply of contact lenses (and glasses as a backup) if necessary
-
Figure out what is essential to bring and what are things you could buy once you arrive (will save you space!)
-
Invest in sturdy, lightweight luggage (bonus if it's colorful so it's easier to find!)
-
Take pictures of your license, passport and SS just in case!
